About Silk Marble Studio Marbled Scarves...

I had a early fascination with marbling from seeing the beautiful designs on the front pages of old books. Marbling is a very ancient art and what was even more fascinating to me was the fact that the marbling process itself was a very well guarded secret. The apprentices who produced the marbled pages were only allowed to do one step of the marbling process and then handed it off to another apprentice to do the next step.

That way, the entire process was never known by any one person, except the master. However, with the introduction of the printing press, this art form all but died out only to reemerge in the 1960’s (tie-dye and all that stuff). Marbling on paper was usually done with oils, but with the introduction of acrylic paints, marbling could now be done on fabric, especially silk.

I do traditional marbled designs using rakes and combs that I made to accomplish the patterns and I also do free form designs. Each scarf is unique. Even with a traditional design, the colors and flow of the patterns will always be one of a kind.

My marble scarves also have a silk painted border that sets off the marbled design beautifully. I use French silk dyes for all my silk painting and the dyes are steam set which allows the scarf to be hand washed.

One day I was looking at a scarf I had marbled and thought, “what else can I do with this” and hit upon the idea of silk painting over the marbled design. I have a lot of fun doing these designs…they are usually rather whimsical.
